Register.com

Overview

This article will teach you how to setup your custom domain records for Register to attach to your new website site. This will allow your visitors to go to yourwebsite.com or www.yourwebsite.com to access your website. You will have to own a domain already purchased from Register.com to follow these instructions.

Compatibility warning

Register.com does not at this time allow users to redirect visitors from the base domain to the www. For this reason, we recommend transferring to a different domain host or setting up a .htaccess 301 redirect (in Redirecting the base domain below) if you wish your website to be accessible from both www and the base domain.

Steps to follow

  1. Login to your Register.com account.
  2. Under My Account, click on the domain name you want to setup.
  3. Scroll down this page and find the advanced technical settings section.
  4. Find CNAME and click Edit Domain Aliases Records.
  5. Enter the following information in the corresponding boxes.
    1. Before the URL: www
    2. Points To: s.multiscreensite.com.com

Click continue and then continue again the next page. You've now setup your domain with Register.com!

Redirecting the base domain

After you've set up the CNAME record for your site, you may notice that your site may not load unless you type in a www in front of your URL. The reason for that is because forwarding needs to be set up to send users from examplesite.com to www.examplesite.com.

You can do this with Register.com by either setting up a .htaccess 301 redirect or by setting up a static IP redirect.

Static IP redirect

The static IP redirect is a method you can use to point users from the base domain to the CNAME record you created (www). To do this, follow the instructions below;

  1. Login to your Register.com account.
  2. Under My Account, click on the domain name you want to setup.
  3. Scroll down this page and find the advanced technical settings section.
  4. Find A Record and click Edit
  5. Enter the following information in the corresponding boxes.
    1. Name/Alias: @
    2. Target/Destination: 208.43.88.227
  6. Save and wait for propagation!

Alternatively, if you wish to set up the .htaccess 301 redirect instead, you can follow the instructions below.

Redirecting the base domain

To set up an .htaccess 301 redirect for your Register.com site, you will first need to purchase hosting from your Register.com account. Without hosting, you cannot set up a .htaccess 301 redirect.

Once you have hosting, follow these steps to set up your .htaccess 301 redirect:

  1. Go to Register.com.
  2. Press Your Account in the top right corner.
  3. Log in if necessary.
  4. Press your domain name.
  5. Press your hosting option (the one immediately under your domain name.)
  6. Press FTP.
  7. Press File Manager.
  8. If the file manager doesn't automatically open in a new window in a few seconds, make sure that pop-ups are not blocked for this page on your browser.
  9. In the search bar at the bottom of the file manager, type the word .htaccess and press Search.
  10. Click the .htaccess file to enter it so you can edit it.
  11. Add the following to the top of the .htaccess (change .yoursitename.com to your site name):
    Redirect 301 / http://www.yoursitename.com
  12. Press Save.

If you don't already have an .htaccess file (the search in step 8 has no results),

  1. Press New File.
  2. In File Name, type .htaccess.
  3. Add the above code to the file.
  4. Press Save.

Common issues

One item that might come up when trying to create the CNAME record is an error message notifying you that there already is a record in place for www.  If this is the case, you will need to remove the existing record.

Wait! Creating CNAME records might take up to 24 hours to fully propagate. This means that your site will not be available quite yet. Also, often after adding a CNAME record Network Solutions does not show that you've added a CNAME record for a few minutes, so please have some patience while Network Solutions updates.
